Two more arrested for Murshidabad double murders
Kolkata: Bengal STF on Monday made two more arrests in the double murder case of a father and son in Jafrabad on April 12, taking the total to seven.
The arrests of Ajfarul Sheikh and Monirul Sheikh are believed to be the most crucial so far after that of another mastermind, Ziaul Sheikh, said the SIT probing the violence in Murshidabad over protests against amendments to the waqf act.

"Ajfarul was arrested by an STF team from his hideout in Saraikela Kharsawan, near Jamshedpur. He was involved in attacking both Harogabindo Das (70) and his son Chandan (40). Sources said he used a chopper that left at least eight wounds on the two victims. He was also seen leading the mob at Bethbona village on April 12," said a top cop on the SIT.
"Ajfarul's interrogation about his operations from Jharkhand is going to provide the most crucial evidence in this case. He has been named repeatedly by others who have been arrested," the cop added.
DIG (Murshidabad Range) Syed Waquar Raza alleged that Monirul, along with Ziaul, was seen leading the mob that entered the Das residence. Cops said he was also spotted on CCTV footage at multiple nearby villages, committing arson and damaging property.
Monirul was arrested in Birbhum's Rampurhat, where he had been hiding since April 12.
Both suspects hail from Sulitala, a village next to Jafrabad from where at least four of the seven arrested hail, claimed cops.
On Sunday, a joint team of Bengal STF and SIT had arrested Fekarul Sk, 24, in Howrah district's Domjur. Investigators said Fekarul was captured on CCTV leading the mob into the victims' house. Suspects in custody identified him as one of the murderers.
ADG (law & order) Jawed Shamim said authorities aimed to gather evidence for a timely charge sheet.
The SIT said raids had been conducted so far at seven spots across five districts in Bengal, Bandhabahal and Jharsuguda in Odisha, and Jamshedpur in Jharkhand. Cops said the arrest of Ziaul, nabbed from Chopra in North Dinajpur, was the lead they were seeking in order to identify the other murder conspirators. Police also arrested brothers Kalu Nadar and Dildar, along with Inzamam Ul Haque. A third Nadar brother remains at large. SIT sources said at least four suspects are still on the run.
